Get ready for a celestial spectacle! Nanaimo's night sky is about to put on a show like no other, and you won't want to miss it. A rare planetary alignment is set to grace our skies, offering an extraordinary opportunity for stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts alike.
Mercury, the elusive planet, will make a brief appearance on Saturday night, quickly dipping below the horizon after sunset. But don't worry, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn will provide a more extended viewing pleasure. Arkos, our astronomy expert, suggests heading out around 6 p.m. to catch Mercury and Venus close to the western horizon. Then, shift your gaze southward to the east, where Jupiter will shine brightly, almost rivaling the full moon.
This alignment began earlier this month and will continue into early March, but Saturday promises the peak viewing experience. The planets will appear closer together, creating a stunning visual display. Arkos emphasizes the importance of finding a dark sky, away from city lights, to fully appreciate the show. "Let your eyes adjust to the darkness," he advises. "The sun's glow lingers, so you'll need to adapt to see the fainter planets. If you wait too long, some planets might already be below the horizon, out of sight.
While seeing four or five planets at once is relatively common, witnessing six is a rare treat. And here's where it gets truly extraordinary: catching a glimpse of seven planets in a single view, as briefly occurred in January 2025, is an event not expected to repeat until 2040! So, mark your calendars and prepare for a once-in-a-lifetime celestial experience.
